Professor Charles Harvey
Professor Charles Harvey
Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences,
Newcastle University UK.

Charles Harvey is Professor of Business History and Management and Pro-Vice-Chancellor for the Humanities and Social Sciences, Newcastle University UK. He graduated from the University of Bristol with a degree in economics and economic history, and remained there to undertake doctoral research in international business history. He began his academic career at Bristol Polytechnic before joining Royal Holloway, University of London, where he established an applied computing programme across the college. His personal research focused on the construction and exploitation of large historical databases, and he was involved in the promotion of historical computing as secretary and then convenor of the Association for Historical Computing in the UK. An outcome of this work was the book Databases in Historical Research (Macmillan, 1996) co-authored with Jon Press. With Penelope Corfield and Edmund Green he worked on the ESRC funded project that led to the publication of the Westminster Historical Database (Bristol Academic Press, 1998), and then on the AHRC funded successor project on the electoral history of London. Beyond London Electoral History, he continues to research on a collaborative basis in economic and business history, strategic management, organization studies, and, most recently, entrepreneurial philanthropy.
